Magnesium Flint and Striker

Written by zeroverseadmin

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant materials in the earths crust and is highly flammable burning at about 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. When shaved into smaller particles it is easier to light and when lit it is extremely difficult to extinguish.

The flint which is commonly used with magnesium is actually a man made material called ferrocerium which produces sparks at high temperatures when scraped with a rough surface or a sharp edge.

There are many strikers that can be used to scrape the flint. Knives are common because they are found in most people’s survival gear. If you want to save the sharpness of your knife blades it may be a good idea to keep a flint striker in your kit.

There are many striker designs to choose from and you can also make your own. A good source of steel to create your striker from can be an old saw blade or steel file.
